In the fall of 1962, the modern day University of Maine School of Law opened its doors on High Street in Portland. There were 27 students, three full-time faculty members, and one shared vision; to create a strong modern law school that would educate leaders, while contributing to the economic and social benefit of Maine and beyond. Fifty years later, with more than 3,300 alumni throughout the U.S. and abroad – many who have made lasting contributions in public service, government, the business world and the legal profession, Maine Law continues to live up to that original vision. We have much to celebrate. But in many ways, Maine Law is just getting started. The Law School continues to evolve and advance, empowering students to achieve professional goals and to make a difference in the lives of others. We are continually refining our curriculum, clinical offerings and robust career development programs to remain relevant in a fluid and global legal marketplace. This 50-year milestone represents an opportunity to reflect on shared achievements, while celebrating today’s success and looking ahead to an exciting future for Maine Law.
